On-going R & D programme Novelis Foil & Technical Products invests in a continuous Research and Development programme – improvement of existing range and development of new highly valuable innovative products – so as to meet the constantly evolving needs of the customers and the markets.
Dedicated Research Centre and Scientists
In 2007, Novelis has set up its new Foil Innovation Centre in Belvaux, Luxembourg in conjunction with Gabriel Lippmann National Research Centre, a globally recognised institution in the field of Surface Analysis. The foil R&D centre includes a laboratory scale pilot line. A core team of Novelis scientists and technologists fully dedicated to research on foil is based there and has access to a wide range of highly sophisticated analytical facilities.
Range of competences supporting foil innovation
In the Foil Innovation Centre a range of competences is available in the fields of metallurgy, surface science, rolling and tribology, corrosion, adhesion/coatings, process optimization and thin films deposition. A short description of the equipment available along with the area of interest is set out below:
Surface Chemistry Analyses: - Auger/XPS (X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy)
- ToF-SIMS (Time of Flight – Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy)
Electron Microscopy: - SEM (Secondary Electron Microscopy)
- TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy)
Topography Analyses: - AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy)
- Confocal Microscope
Corrosion Studies: - Electrochemical and Corrosion Simulation Equipment
